What we’re all about!
When we say, ‘Spread the Slug’ we aren’t recommending a butter or a cream spread for your bagel. Perhaps we will one day but, for now we are just a group of friends, similar to any other, that admire the slug lifestyle: take life slow and enjoy every minute of it. At least that’s what we think of when we see our little slug friend and we want others to feel the same way.
The origin of the Slug can be traced back to our freshman year of college at a boring state school in a cramped, messy dorm room. We would do all sorts of things to counteract the boredom like skateboarding, going to class, listening to music and eating. We would also draw; not like an exclusive collective of artists creating masterpieces, but more like a group of pre-schoolers doodling with no concern for anything.
The best part about drawing was the show-and-tell that would take place after. We always had different finished products but the ideas were mostly the same. There were portraits of our professors, outrageous caricatures of friends, quotes from, ‘Dude, Where’s My Car?’, random things we said and any number of floating eyeballs and strange creatures to take up space on the page. It was kind of shocking how similar some of our drawings could turn out to be but the best was when something so random and unexpected would make us burst out laughing. And that’s exactly what the Slug did. Sitting on the page of a blue-lined notebook, the Slug stared back at us with a confused but confident expression and we fell in love.
Soon enough, we were drawing the Slug on every notebook, bathroom stalls, our skateboards, each other’s faces and any other surface that was vulnerable to a permanent marker. When that wasn’t enough, we decided to make T-shirts for ourselves with some homemade stencils and fabric paint when we probably should’ve been studying. We didn’t care, we were ‘Sluggin’ we would say. When other kids started to notice what we were doing they would come to our dorm with their own white T-shirts and we would print our Slug logo on them. We basically started out as a B.Y.O.S. (bring your own shirt) company but, luckily we won’t have to do that anymore.
The Slug has not changed much since we made our first T-shirt at the beginning of 2009. The only real difference between then and now is how far the Slug has been spread. You can find the Slug in states across the U.S. as well as other countries around the world. Other than that, we are still a group of friends trying to incorporate the Slug with the things we love: music, art, sports, movies, TV and overall self expression. We are not strictly aiming to become a clothing company. We want the Slug to have its own identity that can be experienced in more places than just T-shirts and stickers. The presence of the Slug, wherever it may be –on the back of a car, carved into a table, drawn on a wall, underneath a toilet seat or printed on someone’s shirt– should remind the viewer to laugh and relax and to ‘Spread the Slug’ so that someone else can see him and smile.
